Getting money out of the ATM in Uruguay

23 12 2012

This week we’ve spoken and seen different travellers in Uruguay with a little panic in their eyes while leaving the ATM’s of the Banco Republico del Uruguay. They weren’t able to get money out of the ATM’s. Well..there is one little trick you have to know. Here’s the how to cash money from an ATM in Uruguay! Please share, people are getting in trouble who don’t speak Spanish very well so they can’t ask for help inside the bank,

1. Search for a ‘cajero automatico’ del Banco Republico. They are in every town and shopping centre.
2. Enter your card, enter you PIN and press the green button or “Continuar”.
3. Then you will have the option to choose between languages: English or Espanol. Choose ESPANOL! If you choose English the ATM will give you a message that it’s out of order. (This is not a joke, this is Uruguay 😉 )
4. Then you’ll see the next screen. Choose for “Extracion”, then “Cuenta corriente en dólares”.
5. Now you can choose to cash USD or Pesos Uruguayos. Choose whatever you like, If you choose pesos, you can extract 3000 max. probably 150/ 200 USD max.
6. You’ll see a new screen which shows the amount the bank will be charging you to make the withdrawal. Press the green button.
7. Your money will pop-out.
8. The machine will ask you if you want to do another operation, you can do so to withdraw another amount of money or quit. Your card will pop out.

Enjoy Uruguay, the beach and the summer!
